ittle known Tuerong lies at the Northern gateway to the Mornington Peninsula. Along with Moorooduc, Tuerong is the warmest part of the Peninsula due to a combination of lower altitude and higher latitude. During summer, the afternoon sea breeze brings in air from across Port Phillip Bay that cools the vines but not to the same extent as the Westernport side.
The Tuerong region really shines in cooler years like 2021. Normally it’s only the sun loving MV6 clone that makes the cut for this township wine but this year the small parcel of 114 clone was the outstanding wine. At its best, its a highly perfumed, silky and charming wine but suffers badly in hot years where it tends to become a little jammy and flat. Good in blend but not often a stand alone wine, in my opinion. 2021 proved to be the exception to the rule and yielded a fine and delicious Pinot Noir, very silky and aromatic. There’s also a fair bit of new oak in this wine, contributing some spicy characters and giving some structure to its voluptuous nature. Like all the other wines, also very limited in quantity.
