Description

MERRICKS Set high on an east-west ridge, Merricks finds shelter in the small spurs that come down off the ridge. Cold spring south-westerlies bend the tree tops but down in the vineyard the sun gently warms the 33 year old vines and invariably they respond by setting a small crop of tiny bunches The wines of Merricks are among, if not the best, wines of the Mornington Peninsula. They have an arresting balance between vibrant aromatics, silky smooth palate and firm refreshing tannin’s. The 2021 Merricks is one the best to come from this vineyard that has produced so many wonderful wines over the years. Absolutely typical, showing the cranberry, sour cherry and rhubarb aromas I see every year but perhaps on another level of intensity. The palate is again firm, fine and very long and showing a bit of new oak at this stage. New oak, like whole bunches, is a seasoning that should be used sparingly in the right years and the right vineyard. This years wine has the concentration to carry a bit more oak without detracting from its basic character.
